Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing with the revolutionary Icon 1540 fractional non-ablative laser system is the most modern way to restore your youthful skin, without needles, surgery, or invasive measures. Treatments simply involve stimulating your body’s natural healing cascade by exposing your skin to non-ablative fractional laser energy.

With each burst of microbeam laser, energy whisks away damaged skin cells, allowing your underlying layer of fresh skin to shine through. At the same time, energy wavelengths penetrate through your epidermis and heat underlying tissues to therapeutic levels.

As deeper skin layers start heating up, your brain receives signals to begin a cascade of healing events. This results in an abundance of skin cell regeneration, which ultimately leads to the formation of new collagen, elastin, and skin tissues.

What can skin resurfacing treat?

Skin resurfacing treatments from Women's Center for Integrative Health are based on your skin concerns and desired outcome. Some of the common issues Icon skin resurfacing can treat include:

  • Scars (including acne scars)
  • Stretch marks
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Facial veins
  • Pigmented lesions

Dr. Price specializes in skin resurfacing treatment packages, so if you have additional concerns you’d like addressed on your face, neck, décolleté, or another area, she can help.

For example, one of the most in-demand packages Dr. Price offers for men and women is the ThreeForMe™ treatment. ThreeForMe uses intense-pulsed light (IPL) technology to target sun damage, pigmentation, and facial veins, as well as 1540 fractional non-ablative laser technology to minimize find lines and wrinkles, all during a single service.

How long is the recovery after skin resurfacing?

For the first few days, you might notice that your skin feels itchy, or experience burning or stinging sensations. Your skin is probably going to be lighter and overly sensitive to sunlight — wear sunscreen daily — for several weeks after your skin resurfacing treatment. During this healing period, your skin cells are hard at work sloughing away old damaged cells and encouraging new tissues to develop.

Dr. Price spends time teaching you how to care for your skin during the healing period, which can last for up to two to three weeks. As your skin heals, though, with each passing day, you start noticing a reversal in the effects of aging.

Although a single session can take years off your skin, Dr. Price often recommends getting a package of Icon laser skin resurfacing treatments, then coming into Women's Center for Integrative Health annually for follow-up treatments.
