Well Woman Exam:
A well woman exam is the foundation for wellness and an important part of preventive care, essential to maintaining and improving a woman’s health. It is no secret that healthy living and early detection of disease increases not only your length of life, but more importantly, your quality of living. Serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers are preventable and can be avoided, minimized or improved with routine screenings, healthy living and doctor’s visits. A periodic well woman exam for all ages is not just about good medical care, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn more about beneficial health habits, counseling and community support services.
What is a Well Woman Exam?
The well women exam basically is performed in four parts: the health history, physical exam including a breast exam, pelvic exam and an assessment for other health problems which includes:
Physical & Breast Examination
The physical exam is a head-to-toe exam that gives clues to any health problems. Blood pressure, weight, urine testing and a check for anemia often are done. Your care provider likely perform a thorough physical exam, while also screening for signs of hormonal imbalance. Any problems that are noted may need referral to another care provider. With the breast exam your provider will touch each breast with the pads of the three middle fingers for evidence of lumps or thickening from the bottom of the breast to the collar bone and up under each arm pit. T his area is all breast tissue and needs to be checked.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women have a pelvic exam performed once a year, the first one being at age 21 or within 3 years of the onset of sexual activity, whichever comes first. Your care provider will examine the outer genitalia for any problems then gently insert a sterile instrument called a speculum into the vagina, in order to see the entire vagina and the lower part of the uterus called the cervix. A Pap test may be performed to screen for the human papilloma virus and pre-cancerous cells in the cervix. This allows your care provider to observe any abnormal discharge or appearance to the vagina and cervix. Try to relax. You should feel some pressure but no pain.
Laboratory Tests for Routine Detection and Prevention of Disease
Your care provider may want to perform other lab tests to make sure you are healthy. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a big problem in today's society. Remember, not even condoms will protect you from all infections. Blood, urine and sexually transmitted disease screenings may also be performed. Many times women are not aware that they are infected because they have no symptoms. Whether you are planning the birth of a child or suffering symptoms of diseases, the Women’s Center for Integrative Health wants you to have the most up-to-date information on health conditions, symptoms and treatments.
General Health and Lifestyle
Your doctor may ask you questions about your eating and exercise habits, and may counsel you on alcohol, tobacco or drug use. This is also an opportunity to discuss any physical, mental, or emotional issues you may be experiencing so that your doctor can take the appropriate steps to treat them.
Perimenopausal and Menopausal Care
The voyage through midlife and menopause is a unique and personal experience for each woman. Here at Women’s Center for Integrative Health, we have years of experience helping women during this special stage of their lives.
